Tuberculosis in French Guiana. 2024 Report.
Key Points
Tuberculosis (TB)
In 2024, 74 cases of TB were reported in French Guiana. The number of reported cases has remained generally stable at around 70 per year since 2018.
The crude incidence rate remains the highest in France at 25.4 reported cases per 100,000 inhabitants, but is lower than in most of French Guiana’s neighboring countries.
The sociodemographic characteristics of cases remained generally stable between 2019 and 2024: reported cases involved a majority of men, people aged 25 to 59, and people born abroad.
The majority (80%) of cases reported in 2024 were pulmonary, and 88% were diagnosed following spontaneous presentation for care.
No cases of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis were reported in 2024, compared to 2 in 2023.
Treatment Outcomes
Information on treatment outcomes has increased significantly for cases in 2023 (72%), reflecting the efforts made by reporting entities to improve data completeness. Continued efforts are necessary to improve the quality of performance evaluation of the tuberculosis care system.
Among the cases reported in 2023 for which the treatment outcome is known, only 67.3% had completed their treatment (below the 85% target set by the WHO).
Latent Tuberculosis Infections (LTIs)
The number of reported LTI cases was 17 in 2024, an increase compared to 2023 but equal to the average number of reports over the 2019–2024 period, and involved only children aged 0–14 years.
Diagnosis following a case investigation remains the most common context for LTI diagnosis (62.5%), but the proportion of LTI diagnoses resulting from systematic screening rose sharply in 2024 (38%).
