Public Health Bulletin: Vaccination in French Guiana. April 2019.

Key Points

Vaccination uptake is increasing among infants born since January 1, 2018, who are subject to the expanded vaccination requirement. Compared to infants born during the same period (between January and May) the previous year, the impact of vaccination is:

  • +22.1 percentage points in vaccination coverage for the first dose of the meningococcal C vaccine

  • + 6.4 percentage points for the use of the hexavalent vaccine, including the hepatitis B vaccine, among infants vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, and polio

  • + 4.4 percentage points for vaccination coverage of the first dose of the pneumococcal vaccine.

This improvement applies to children receiving care in the private sector along the coast and very likely overestimates the impact of vaccination. The available data do not allow for conclusions regarding children receiving care outside the private sector.

In general, however, vaccination coverage remains insufficient in French Guiana, particularly for the "3-dose pneumococcal," meningococcal C, human papillomavirus, and "2-dose measles, mumps, rubella" vaccines.

The rate of submission of 24-month health certificates (CS24) remains low in French Guiana (11% versus 27% at the national level in 2016). The regional analysis of vaccination coverage masks significant territorial heterogeneity in French Guiana, which is the subject of ongoing research.
