Key Points

Dengue

  • Over the past two weeks, dengue activity in the territory remained low, with a total of 5 confirmed cases (4 in week 37 and 1 in week 38). Of these, 1 was from the Western Coast, 2 from the Savanes sector, and 2 from Cayenne Island. The serotype identified was exclusively DENV-2.

  • Since the beginning of the year, 275 cases of dengue have been confirmed in French Guiana, an average of 6 per week. Of these, 138 were from the Savanes sector, 58 from the Western Coast, 32 from Cayenne Island, 9 from Maroni, 1 from the Eastern Interior sector; the location was undetermined for 31 cases, and 6 were residents outside French Guiana. Of the 186 samples serotyped, 98% were DENV-2.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases was low and showed a slight increase over the past two weeks, with 7 cases (5 in Week 37 and 2 in Week 38, vs. 1 total in Weeks 35 and 36). Among these cases, 1 was P. falciparum imported from the African continent and 6 were P. vivax cases, including 1 relapse.

  • In total, 119 malaria cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity was low and stable over the past two months. Most infections occurred in gold-mining areas.

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • Influenza activity remained low and stable throughout the country.

  • The bronchiolitis outbreak has been on a slight rise for the past two weeks but remains at a low level overall. The end of the outbreak was declared two weeks ago.

  • COVID-19 activity remained low in French Guiana, with no emergency room visits at the three hospitals for this reason in recent weeks.

Diarrhea

  • Activity was moderate, on the rise in primary care centers and local hospitals, and stable in the emergency departments of the three hospitals.
