Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of June 26, 2025.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Over the past two weeks (W24 and W25), overall dengue activity in the territory was low, with an average of 6 confirmed cases per week. The majority of cases were reported in the Savanes sector. The serotype identified over the past two weeks was exclusively DENV-2.

  • Since the beginning of the year, 224 cases of dengue have been confirmed in French Guiana, averaging 9 cases per week. Of these, 124 were from the Savanes sector, 44 from the West Coast sector, 25 from Cayenne Island, and 9 from the Maroni sector; the location is unknown for 17 additional cases, and 5 were residents outside French Guiana. Among the 162 serotyped samples, 98% are DENV-2 and 2% are DENV-3.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remained low, with 3 cases (1 in S24 and 2 in S25, vs. 6 in total in S22 and S23). Of these 3 cases, 1 was P. falciparum imported from the African continent; the other 2 cases were P. vivax (no relapse).

  • In total, 78 malaria cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity declined between January and May (from 27 to 10 cases per month) and appears to have stabilized in June. Since the beginning of the year, most infections have occurred in gold mining areas.

Acute respiratory infections

  • A resurgence of the flu epidemic has been observed in French Guiana since May. The overall trend shows a decline in activity in S25.

  • Activity related to bronchiolitis in infants has been on the rise since early May and has reached epidemic levels. This increase could be temporary, as was observed during the same period in 2024; the onset of the seasonal epidemic is usually observed in August in the territory.

Diarrhea

  • Activity has been generally stable in remote communities (CDPS and local hospitals) and along the coast over the past two weeks.
