Epidemiological Situation of Dengue in French Guiana. Update as of November 16, 2020.

Epidemiological Situation

The dengue epidemic in French Guiana peaked in June–July 2020 and is now in a declining phase at the regional level.
The Oyapock sector is in the phase of localized outbreaks and has shown a decline in viral circulation over the past several weeks. All other sectors are in the epidemic phase but exhibit regional variations in the evolution of the dengue epidemiological situation:

  • Maroni sector: in an epidemic phase since S2020-04, returning to normal

  • Western Coast sector: in an epidemic phase since S2020-17, returning to normal

  • Kourou sector: in an epidemic phase since S2020-12, declining

  • Cayenne Island sector: epidemic since S2020-17, decreasing

  • Interior and East Coast sector: epidemic since S2020-37, slowing

Emergency room visits for dengue are falling at CHC and CHOG and slightly decreasing at CHK. Hospitalizations for dengue have been decreasing since August.
The circulating serotypes are primarily DEN-1 and DEN-2. The importation of DEN-3 cases—a serotype circulating in the current epidemic in the Antilles—could pose a risk of reigniting the epidemic in French Guiana. Since August, several cases imported from Martinique have been detected, as well as two cases of local transmission of DEN-3 in October and November.
