COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of September 2, 2021
Key Points
After three consecutive weeks of increases, surveillance indicators remain at a high level but show a slowdown in the epidemic. Indeed, with an incidence rate in week 34 reaching 456 cases per 100,000 inhabitants—a 5% increase (compared to 16% and 43% in the previous two weeks)—the spread of the virus continues but at a slower pace.
This slowdown is observed across all regions, including the West, where the fourth wave began later.
For the second consecutive week, the effective R (1.09) was slightly down but still significantly above 1, also reflecting the observed slowdown.
Since the start of the week, the trend has been toward stabilization (with 714 new cases recorded compared to 745 last week at the same time), but no signs of a decline have yet been observed, and a resurgence of the epidemic remains possible as people return from vacation and schools reopen.
Regarding hospitalizations across all departments, the trend is stable, and a slight decrease in intensive care admissions is observed.
As of September 2, 2021, and since the start of the fourth wave, 26 deaths have been recorded (for a total of 221 deaths since March 4, 2020).
Among people aged 50 and older in French Guiana, 1 in 3 is vaccinated. In the general population, vaccination coverage for a full course stands at 20% (versus 19.5% last week), reflecting the slow progress of vaccination.
