COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of October 21, 2021
Key Points
For the fourth consecutive week, the decline has continued, now at a steady pace: the incidence rate stands at 267 per 100,000, representing a 28% drop in one week, and the effective R stands at 0.71, also down. This decline is observed in the most populous sectors (Cayenne Island, Savanes, and the Western Coast). The epidemic peak was passed at the end of September. The positivity rate is also falling. Only a slight increase was observed in the Oyapock sector, which remains protected by a high vaccination rate.
At the same time, the decline in hospitalizations continued, with 73 admissions to general wards (-13%) and 11 admissions to intensive care, compared to 16 the previous week.
The number of deaths also fell slightly last week, but the total number of deaths in the fourth wave has already reached that of the third: 102 deaths.
Vaccination coverage is progressing slowly in French Guiana, standing at 24.3% for a full course and 32.6% among the eligible population aged 12 and older.
One in two French Guianese aged 50 to 74 has now received at least one dose of the vaccine: the vaccine’s excellent protective effect against severe illness after the second dose is a good reason to complete the vaccination series, and offers a more optimistic outlook in the event of a resurgence of viral circulation in the coming weeks.
