COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana, June 3, 2021
Key Points
From May 24 to 30, a slight decline was observed following a week of stabilization the previous week. However, the weekly incidence rate remains high at 369 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The testing rate continued to decline in week 21, accompanied by an increase in the positivity rate.
As of June 1, the effective reproduction number (R) of cases had fallen to 0.9.
At the regional level, a decline in the incidence rate was confirmed last week on the island of Cayenne and in Savanes, along with stabilization along the western coast (St. Laurent).
Hospitalizations were down last week, while intensive care admissions were up, reflecting the impact of previous weeks.
The total number of deaths since March 2020 stands at 121.
Vaccination is progressing in French Guiana, particularly among the most vulnerable: 30% of those aged 50 to 74 have received a first vaccine dose, and approximately 25% are now fully vaccinated. Vaccination in these age groups and among people with underlying conditions that put them at risk of severe COVID-19 remains a priority, and appointments are now available for those aged 12 and older.
These relatively encouraging figures are to be confirmed in the coming days and justify continuing our efforts: getting tested at the slightest sign of symptoms, continuing to limit social contacts, and adhering to preventive measures and social distancing guidelines in all settings, both private and professional.
