COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of July 8, 2021

Key Points

With fewer than 550 cases last week compared to nearly 700 the week before, the decline in confirmed cases accelerated in Week 26. This represents a nearly 22% decrease in the regional incidence rate compared to the previous week, which stands at 185 per 100,000 residents.
The positivity rate fell to 7%, well below the 10% threshold and approaching the 5% threshold. The testing rate remains stable. As of July 6, the effective reproduction number (R) for cases was 0.8, still significantly below 1 and declining.

At the regional level, a clear decline in the incidence rate is confirmed across the entire territory, with the sharpest drop recorded in Western French Guiana (-27%) and Cayenne Island (-19%), and the smallest in Savanes/Kourou (-10%). In week 26, no new suspected cases of the Delta variant were detected.

Hospitalizations were down, with 60 hospitalizations compared to 90 in week 25. Intensive care admissions remained stable at 15, the same as the previous week. These hospital indicators show a delayed response to the incidence of confirmed cases.
Emergency room visits were down in all hospitals. The total number of deaths since March 2020 stands at 156.

One in three people aged 50–74, and one in four people aged 75 and older, is now fully vaccinated. This is a success.
Vaccination prevents more than 90% of severe cases. It is our best ally against the risk of a new variant emerging.
The occurrence of clusters, particularly in the workplace, underscores the importance of preventive measures in the workplace and of getting tested at the slightest sign of symptoms.
