COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of December 8, 2021

Key Points

  • The trend in confirmed cases remains stable in French Guiana, with the incidence rate stabilizing at 89 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for the second consecutive week and below 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for the third consecutive week.

  • The incidence rates in the Cayenne Island and Savanes sectors were above 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and remained higher than the average in French Guiana, influenced by significant disparities between municipalities. The rate for the Western Coast was 27 cases per 100,000 inhabitants—a very low level.

  • The effective R value stood at 0.97. The regional positivity rate remained below the 5% alert threshold, accompanied by an increasing testing rate.

  • Hospitalizations across all departments were down slightly, with 22 hospitalizations in S48. Two ICU admissions and two deaths were recorded last week.

  • A slight increase in incidence and positivity rates has been observed among those over 50 over the past two weeks, which is why a focus has been added to this epidemiological report (p. 8). As the holidays approach, these infections can be prevented by getting a booster shot, starting the vaccination series, and remaining vigilant about standard preventive measures.

  • The new Omicron variant has not yet been detected in French Guiana; the Delta variant remains the dominant strain in the territory.

  • Vaccination coverage data, which is currently being updated, is not included in this epidemiological update and will be available again starting next week.
