Epidemiology of Tuberculosis in Brittany: Cases Reported Between 2000 and 2007

Data from mandatory tuberculosis reporting (DO) between 2000 and 2007 in Brittany were analyzed. Brittany had the third-highest incidence rate in France (1,975 reported cases, eight cases per 100,000). A significant decrease in incidence was observed over the study period. This reflected the decline in incidence beginning in 2001 compared to the 1990s. The disease affected a population with a mean age of 55 years, compared to 45 years for the rest of the country (p < 0.001), and 80% of patients were born in France, compared to 46% for the rest of the country (p < 0.001). The rate of multidrug resistance was 1.3% compared to 4.6% (p < 0.001) nationally. The completeness of reporting was estimated at 80% in Brittany compared to 70% for all of France. Despite a decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis in Brittany, the lifting of the vaccination requirement calls for continued efforts in disease surveillance. (R.A.)
