Clusters of pediatric hemolytic-uremic syndrome, Finistère department, 1993–2000
In France, a surveillance system for pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in children under the age of 15 was established in 1996 following a study covering the years 1993–1995. Its objectives are to track the spatial and temporal trends of HUS in children under 15 in France and identify the causative agents, to determine the characteristics of cases, and to detect epidemic outbreaks. In Brittany, HUS surveillance relies on the two pediatric nephrology referral centers at the University Hospitals of Rennes and Brest. In total, from 1993 to 2000, 63 cases of HUS were recorded in Brittany, where the average regional incidence of HUS among children under fifteen is higher than the national average and higher than in other regions. Half of the HUS cases recorded in Brittany occurred in the department of Finistère. In this article, the authors report on the analysis of HUS cases occurring from 1993 to 2000 in metropolitan France and Brittany, conducted to determine whether there was an excess of HUS cases in Finistère and to describe their main epidemiological characteristics.
