Invasive Meningococcal Infections in France in 2014The French Institute for Public Health Surveillance has just updated the epidemiological report on invasive meningococcal infections in France in 2014 on its website. In 2014, 426 invasive meningococcal infections were reported, including 417 in mainland France and 9 in the overseas departments. The estimated incidence rate, adjusted for underreporting in mainland France, was 0.72 per 100,000 inhabitants—the lowest in 20 years and representing a 27% decrease compared to 2013 (0.99, p < 10⁻³). Of the 412 cases for which the serogroup was known, 230 (55.8%) were serogroup B, and 122 (29.6%) were serogroup C. In 2014, the notification rates per 100,000 inhabitants were 0.35 for serogroup B IIMs, 0.19 for IIM C. The number of IIM cases of serogroup B has been on a downward trend for the past 3 years, with the notification rate falling from 0.60 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2011 (391 reported cases) to 0.36 in 2014 (230 cases, p < 0.03).The reporting rate for IIM C decreased between 2013 and 2014, but this decrease is not statistically significant. The increase in IIM C notification rates observed between 2010 and 2013 did not continue in 2014, except among children under 1 year of age (+20%), children aged 1–4 years (+63%), and adults aged 25–59 years (+10%). This situation indicates that vaccination coverage levels are still insufficient to achieve herd immunity and indirectly protect children under 1 year of age, among whom the incidence remains the highest. In our two regions, the number of invasive meningococcal infections in 2014 was 9 in Burgundy and 7 in Franche-Comté, bringing the reported rates to 0.55 and 0.59 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively.
