Public Health Surveillance in the Rhône-Alpes Region. Epidemiological Update as of June 7, 2012.

Situation in Rhône-Alpes

  • Allergens

In the Rhône-Alpes region, consolidated data from the last two weeks of monitoring confirm a significant increase in the use of emergency services and SOS Médecins, in connection with allergic reactions. In fact, since week 20 (mid-May), the number of calls to SOS Médecins for "allergies" has more than doubled in a single week, rising from 40 to over 100 calls per week. This trend is significantly more pronounced compared to the previous two years. This can be explained, as indicated by the RNSA (National Aerobiological Surveillance Network: http://www.pollens.fr/accueil.php), "by the alternation of hot spells and stormy episodes, which promotes grass pollination." Emergency departments participating in the Oscour® network have also been overwhelmed, with 98 emergency room visits in week 20, 126 in week 21, and 151 in week 22.

  • Chickenpox

According to the Sentinelles network, in week 22, chickenpox had a national incidence of 35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Rhône-Alpes region is below this threshold, with 22 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Surveillance data from emergency departments and SOS Médecins also report circulation of the chickenpox virus. The age group under 15 years is predominantly affected.
