Leading Causes of Death in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. 2023 Report.

Key Points

  • In 2023, 72,049 deaths were recorded among residents of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, representing a standardized rate of 749 per 100,000 inhabitants;

  • The regional mortality rate is down compared to 2022 (797 per 100,000 inhabitants) and lower than the national rate (798 per 100,000 inhabitants);

  • Tumors and diseases of the circulatory system remain the two leading causes of death in the region and in each department in 2023. It is therefore essential to continue efforts to prevent the risk factors for these diseases (tobacco, alcohol, physical inactivity, etc.);

  • Among those under 65, external causes (primarily accidents of daily life, accidental falls, and suicides/self-inflicted injuries) remain the second leading cause of death after tumors;

  • Male mortality remains higher than female mortality in 2023 (standardized rate of 963 per 100,000 men versus 592 per 100,000 women), across all major causes;

  • There are regional disparities: all-cause standardized mortality rates are higher than the national average in Cantal, Haute-Loire, and Allier;

  • There has been a marked decline in Covid-19 mortality, which became the 9th leading cause of death in 2023.
