Health Surveillance in Auvergne. Epidemiological Update as of September 10, 2015.
Mushroom Poisonings During the 2015 Season. Status as of September 2, 2015The InVS has been conducting annual surveillance of mushroom poisoning cases since 2010, based on cases recorded by the Poison Control and Toxicovigilance Centers (CAPTV) and the Oscour® network. Mushroom growth is linked to weather conditions (primarily humidity levels). Each year, approximately three deaths and more than twenty serious cases are reported by the CAPTVs. Health surveillance is seasonal and runs from July 1 (week 27) to December 31 (week 52). Generally, 90% of mushroom poisoning cases are recorded during this period. During this period, the InVS continues its weekly national surveillance. In France, 212 cases of mushroom poisoning were recorded by the CAPTVs between Monday, June 29, 2015 (Week 27) and Sunday, August 30, 2015 (Week 35). Since Week 32, the number of mushroom poisoning cases recorded by the CAPTVs has been steadily increasing, with a cumulative total of 126 cases for Weeks 34 and 35 alone, representing 59% of all cases since June 29, 2015. To date, no deaths or serious cases have been reported by the network of poison control centers. In terms of geographic distribution, these cases were observed mainly in Aquitaine (47 cases), Midi-Pyrénées (36 cases), Rhône-Alpes (27 cases), and Franche-Comté (13 cases). The Oscour® network recorded 157 emergency room visits for mushroom poisoning during the same period. No cases were reported in Auvergne. This resurgence in mushroom poisoning cases is linked to the return of rainfall, which promotes mushroom growth and, consequently, their harvesting.
