In Week 52 (W52), viral circulation accelerated sharply in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, with incidence doubling in one week, linked to the very rapid spread of the Omicron variant. The number of new hospitalizations is significant and continues to rise moderately, while admissions to critical care units are stabilizing.
Bronchiolitis
During W52 (December 27 to January 2), in hospital settings, according to data reported by emergency departments in the Oscour® network, the bronchiolitis outbreak among children under 2 years of age continues in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. In Week 52, 532 emergency department visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age were recorded, representing 15.7% of visits in this age group (16.4% in Week 51). Of these visits, 206 were followed by hospitalization, resulting in a hospitalization rate of 38.7% for this diagnosis. Hospitalizations for bronchiolitis accounted for 39.2% of all hospitalizations among children under 2 years of age in S52, a proportion that increased slightly compared to S51 (37.3% in S51).
Influenza
During Week 52, in inpatient care, according to data reported by emergency departments in the Oscour® network, visits across all age groups for a diagnosis of influenza/influenza-like illness were on the rise compared to previous weeks in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. In Week 52, 234 emergency department visits for influenza/influenza-like illness were recorded, representing 0.6% of all visits across all age groups (0.4% in Week 51). Among these visits, 122 cases (51.7%) were under 15 years of age, and 24 cases (10.3%) were 65 years of age or older. Of the 234 visits, 37 were followed by hospitalization, representing a hospitalization rate of 15.8% for this diagnosis (8.3% for those under 15 and 58.3% for those aged 65 and older). Hospitalizations for influenza/influenza-like illness accounted for 0.4% of all hospitalizations in Week 52, an increase compared to the previous week (0.1% in Week 51).
