Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Bulletin of June 4, 2026.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue activity has been low over the past two weeks, consistent with levels typically observed during the inter-epidemic period.

Chikungunya

  • Since the detection of the first confirmed case of chikungunya in late January, 621 cases have been biologically confirmed in French Guiana, including 437 in the Western Coast sector (70%), which remains in an epidemic phase. The circulation of the virus appears to be intensifying across the territory, particularly in the Savanes and Cayenne Island sectors, both of which are in the epidemic outbreak phase, and in the Maroni sector, which remains, however, in the sporadic transmission phase. The Interior, Eastern Interior, and Oyapock sectors remain under epidemiological surveillance.
  • The epidemic continues in the Western Littoral, which is at the “alert status” level under the ORSEC plan for combating arboviruses.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases reported in the country was low and declining over the past two weeks, with 4 cases recorded (1 in S21 and 3 in S22) compared to a total of 15 in S19 and S20. These 4 cases were caused by P. vivax (including 1 relapse). Since the beginning of the year, 119 cases of malaria have been reported, including 16 in March, 15 in April, and 20 in May. Over the past three months, infections have occurred primarily in gold-mining areas in the Savanes sector.

Acute respiratory infections

  • Bronchiolitis: Since early May, an increase in bronchiolitis-related activity has been observed in primary care centers (CDPS), local hospitals, and the emergency departments of the three CHU sites, with increasing detection of RSV in biological samples and a rise in hospitalizations of infants in intensive care or continuous care units. The bronchiolitis outbreak has begun in the region.
  • Flu-like illness and COVID-19: activity related to influenza and SARS-CoV-2 was low.

Diarrhea

  • Diarrhea-related activity was high over the past two weeks in the emergency departments at the three CHU sites and at a moderate level in primary care.
