Key Points

Extreme heat, heat wave

  • Between Thursday, May 21, and Saturday, May 30, 2026, France experienced a prolonged and intense heat wave for the month of May. This prompted the early activation of the national heat wave plan.
  • In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Drôme, Isère, and Rhône departments were placed under a yellow heatwave alert between May 26 and 31 (week 22).
  • During this period, at the regional level, 230 emergency room visits and 52 SOS Médecins interventions for iCanicule were recorded. People aged 75 and older were the most affected, accounting for 52% of emergency room visits and 29% of SOS Médecins interventions.

Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika

  • From May 1 (start of enhanced surveillance) to June 2, 2026, the following were identified:
    • 3 imported cases of chikungunya;
    • 12 imported cases of dengue (67% imported from the Caribbean);
    • 0 cases of Zika.

Notifiable Diseases

At the regional level, Santé publique France is monitoring four notifiable diseases with epidemic potential in particular: hepatitis A, invasive meningococcal disease, Legionnaires’ disease, and measles. As of June 3, 2026:

  • 59 cases of hepatitis A
  • 26 cases of invasive meningococcal disease
  • 108 cases of Legionnaires’ disease
  • 9 cases of measles

Mortality 

  • Between weeks 18 and 21 (April 27 to May 24, 2026), no excess mortality was observed.
