While the seasonal flu outbreak appears to be slowing slightly in mainland France, it continues to surge in Corsica, where flu-related activity in emergency departments and community settings continues to rise sharply and exceeds the levels seen during last year’s peak.

In addition, cases of bronchiolitis—which primarily affects infants under 1 year of age—are also on the rise in urban areas, and Corsica entered the epidemic phase in week 52.

The intensity level of all acute lower respiratory infections in Corsica has thus reached a very high level for the first time this season.

In light of this situation, the Corsican Regional Health Agency (ARS) emphasizes the importance of vaccination and preventive measures to protect the most vulnerable, particularly during this holiday season and time of gatherings, which often involves close contact in enclosed spaces with family and friends.

If you experience flu-like symptoms—fever, body aches, cough, or sore throat—it is recommended that you take appropriate protective measures, including postponing your participation in New Year’s Eve celebrations or meals with loved ones. Festive events held indoors during the holiday season that involve close contact create environments conducive to virus transmission. Remaining vigilant helps limit risks to yourself and others.

Health Monitoring in Corsica. Bulletin of December 31, 2025.

Flu

Toutes les régions sont en épidémie sauf La Réunion

According to the latest regional epidemiological bulletin from Santé publique France Paca-Corse, the volume of cases handled by the SOS Médecins association and emergency services related to the flu or flu-like symptoms continues to rise sharply as the year comes to a close in Corsica:

  • at SOS Médecins, more than a third of cases are related to the flu;

  • in emergency departments, flu-related activity is also rising, as is the proportion of hospitalizations following a visit to the emergency department for the flu;

  • activity levels observed in week 52 exceed the peak activity levels observed last season.

Bronchiolitis

Toutes les régions de l'Hexagone sont en épidémie

According to the latest regional epidemiological bulletin from Santé publique France Paca-Corse, even though the intensity of circulation remains lower than for the flu, Corsica is entering an epidemic phase for bronchiolitis:

  • activity at SOS Médecins among children under 1 year of age is increasing, as are hospitalizations following a visit to the emergency room;

  • activity is consistent with that observed in previous seasons.

Vaccination: Essential Protection for Those at Risk

The flu vaccine significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and hospitalization, especially among vulnerable individuals… and it prevents you from “ruining” your winter with several days (or even weeks) of extreme fatigue, fever, and complications. The epidemic generally lasts until March—don’t wait; there’s still time to get vaccinated!

There are two ways to prevent bronchiolitis in infants: vaccinating pregnant women against RSV and immunizing newborns with Beyfortus®.

Keep up your protective measures

To combat the spread and transmission of winter viruses, it is essential to continue practicing preventive measures:

  • Wear a mask if you have symptoms, especially in crowded places and all healthcare settings (nursing homes, hospitals, doctors’ and medical professionals’ offices, pharmacies, etc.) or when around vulnerable people who are at risk of developing severe illness;

  • Regularly air out and ventilate your home and other indoor spaces;

  • Wash your hands regularly;

  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow.

Specific measures to prevent bronchiolitis

  • Avoid taking your child to crowded indoor public places, such as supermarkets, restaurants, and public transportation;

  • Wash your hands before and after each diaper change, feeding, meal, or cuddle;

  • Do not share unwashed bottles, pacifiers, or utensils;

  • Do not smoke around babies and children.

Contagious diseases most often affect children at a very young age. Because children are particularly vulnerable, they are a priority target for vaccination programs.
