A report by Santé publique France, presenting the final conclusions of the study conducted following a report by the Normandy Regional Health Agency (ARS Normandie) regarding several cases of pediatric cancer in the Pont de l’Arche and Igoville areas of the Eure department, has just been published. Prior to its release, it was presented yesterday to elected officials from the affected area and representatives of the association “La vérité pour nos enfants” (Truth for Our Children), in the presence of Charles Giusti, Prefect of the Eure department; Philippe Luccioni-Michaux, Departmental Director of the Normandy Regional Health Agency (ARS Normandie); and Mélanie Martel, Regional Delegate of Santé publique France Normandie.
This study shows that no new cases of pediatric leukemia were recorded in the area in question between 2020 and 2022.
In 2019, several cases of pediatric cancer were reported in the northern part of the Eure department, in an area encompassing several municipalities, including Pont de l’Arche and Igoville. Following these reports, the Normandy Regional Health Agency (ARS) referred the matter to Santé publique France to conduct a thorough investigation.
An initial analysis, conducted in 2020, did indeed reveal an excess of leukemia cases diagnosed between 2017 and 2019 among children under 15, compared to national statistics. However, no excess was observed for other types of cancer. Epidemiological and environmental investigations at the time failed to identify any risk factors or specific circumstances that could explain this cluster of cases. The hypothesis adopted was that of a random fluctuation (as the cases were not distributed evenly over time and space).
Surveillance of new leukemia cases was implemented using data from the Childhood Cancer Registry (RNCE). The results of this surveillance show that no new cases of pediatric leukemia were recorded in the affected area between 2020 and 2022.
These results confirm the findings of the initial investigation and do not require continued enhanced surveillance. Monitoring of the situation is now conducted within the standard framework of national surveillance, carried out by the RNCE across the entire metropolitan territory.
