Waste Storage and Public Health: Summary and Recommendations

In collaboration with numerous institutional and scientific partners, the InVS coordinated the study titled "Waste Storage and Public Health." The objective was to assess the current state of scientific knowledge regarding the reality, circumstances, nature, and extent of any potential health impacts of the storage of household and similar waste, as well as industrial waste. The methodology involved first establishing a classification of French storage sites; subsequently, a quantitative health risk assessment was conducted based on bibliographic data and French contamination data from various storage facilities. Based on these available data, the results indicate a reduction in health risks as the operational requirements for these facilities become more stringent. However, conducting this risk assessment process revealed a significant number of knowledge gaps at every stage: toxicological aspects, concentrations in the environment, and exposure estimation. Uncertainty and variability were primarily addressed qualitatively. The collection of additional data is essential, as is consideration of the implementation of environmental and health monitoring systems. Organizing consultation with the local population is a major challenge. (R.A.)
