Comparison of Two National Surveys on Food Consumption Among Adolescents and Adults—the Health and Nutrition Barometer (2002) and INCA (1998–99): Methodological Details and Results.
The purpose of this study was to compare, using data from two national dietary surveys (Baromètre santé nutrition, 2002, and INCA, 1998–99), the percentages of the adolescent and adult population meeting various dietary intake targets (expressed as frequency). These benchmarks cover several food groups and are derived from the recommendations of the National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS), thus corresponding to current and standard dietary benchmarks. The general trends appeared comparable between the two surveys despite very different methodologies, particularly regarding the questionnaires, although significant differences were identified from a quantitative perspective for certain food groups and in certain age and gender categories; these differences can be explained in part by the methodological characteristics specific to each survey. This study notably demonstrated that harmonizing definitions of portion sizes and food groups is necessary to compare studies with one another.
