Physical Activity: A Review of the Benefits and Risks
It is a little-known fact: scientific studies show that participating in sports as part of a club or team appears to offer greater benefits than individual activities, due to the social nature of such participation. More broadly, regular physical activity is associated with a reduction in premature mortality, ranging from 29% to 41% depending on the study. However, physical activity is also beneficial for the mind: it promotes social cohesion and integration, and provides positive emotional experiences through group inclusion or the positive regard of others. Participating in sports contributes to citizenship education, instilling values central to citizenship: self-respect and respect for others, as well as solidarity. Working together while respecting opponents helps develop a sense of belonging and psychosocial skills such as self-confidence, cooperation, active listening, and empathy. However, participating in sports also carries risks of injury, addiction, and other issues.
