Alzheimer's disease and related dementias: rates of long-term care, hospitalizations, and mortality in mainland France, 2007 and 2010
Objectives. This study provides an overview of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (ADOD) in mainland France using existing databases and initiates a discussion on the monitoring methods that should be implemented based on medical-administrative databases and medical causes of death. Methods. The data cover two years (2007 and 2010) and are drawn from the health insurance databases on long-term conditions (ALD), hospitalizations (stays and patients), and death certificates. The selection algorithm corresponds to the ICD-10 codes for MAAD (G30, F00, F01, F03). Results. In 2010, 316,115 people were enrolled in ALD15; 228,190 were hospitalized with a MAAD, and 54,291 died with a MAAD. Between 2007 and 2010, despite the short study period, the number of patients with ALD15 increased by 14.6%, the number of people hospitalized with AD or related dementias increased by 23.6%, and the number of deaths with AD or related dementias increased by 13.9%. Conclusion. These results highlight the considerable and growing burden of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias on society. They further confirm the value of analyzing medical-administrative databases—ideally by cross-referencing them—and medical causes of death in monitoring these conditions, as a complement to cohort studies.
