Surveillance of occupational diseases: Implementation of the "Quinzaines MCP" protocol in French companies in the energy sector.
Approximately 140,000 employees of the EDF and GDF Suez groups are monitored by their companies’ occupational health services. In 2007, a working group of about a dozen physicians sought to implement the “Quinzaines des maladies à caractère professionnel” (MCP) protocol in order to estimate the frequency of work-related illnesses and identify the employee groups most affected. This protocol, developed by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) and the Occupational Health Inspection (IMT), was adapted and offered to company occupational physicians in 2008 and 2010. In 2008 and 2010, 110 (64%) and 98 (55%) physicians, respectively, participated in the Fortnightly Surveys, and 4,638 and 3,581 employees were seen during visits. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) was estimated at 1.7% in 2008 and 1.9% in 2010, and that of various forms of psychological distress at 4.8% and then 4.2%. More than one-third of MSDs corresponded to an occupational disease. The overall prevalence of all conditions is close to that observed in the InVS/IMT biweekly surveys (6 to 7%). However, psychological distress is 2 to 3 times more common, and MSDs are half as common. Furthermore, expected associations with gender, age, and job level were identified. An InVS-EDF agreement was signed in late 2011 to ensure the long-term continuation of this partnership. (R.A.)
