Prevalence of strokes and their sequelae and their impact on activities of daily living: findings from the 2008–2009 “Disability, Health, and Households” and “Disability, Health, and Institutions” surveys

Objectives - The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of strokes and their sequelae among the French population living in ordinary households or in institutions, and to describe mobility limitations and difficulties with activities of daily living (ADL) among people with stroke sequelae. Methods - Handicapsanté is a system of self-report surveys conducted via face-to-face interviews comprising a "household" component (HSM, conducted in 2008) and an "institutional" component (HSI, in 2009); 29,931 people were interviewed for HSM and 9,104 for HSI. Results - HSM and HSI estimated the prevalence of a history of stroke at 1.2% and that of sequelae at 0.8%. The most common sequelae were balance and memory disorders. Among those with sequelae, 51% reported having great difficulty or being unable to walk 500 meters, and 45.3% reported difficulties with at least one ADL (most often personal hygiene). Among those with stroke sequelae, 11.1% resided in a care facility, of whom 86.8% had difficulties with at least one ADL. Conclusion - The prevalence of stroke sequelae in the French population was estimated at 0.8%. The impact on ADLs is common: it affects nearly half of those with sequelae, with this proportion rising to 9 out of 10 among those living in institutions. (R.A.)
