Zika virus infection in pregnant women
An outbreak of Zika virus infection is currently underway in South America and in the French overseas departments (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint Martin). This infection is associated with a risk of potentially serious congenital complications. However, the exact incidence and nature of fetal complications are not known. Preventive measures must therefore be taken and are recommended by national health authorities (High Council for Public Health [HCSP], Directorate General of Health [DGS], Biomedicine Agency [ABM], National Institute for Health Surveillance [InVS]) and international organizations (WHO, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control [ECDC], etc.). The infection has been included on the list of notifiable diseases in France since February 2, 2016. Here, we provide a practical overview of the current recommendations for managing Zika virus infection or suspected infection in pregnant women, based on the current state of knowledge.
