Epidemiology of Dengue Fever and Control Strategies in French Polynesia, 2006–2008.

Introduction - This article presents an epidemiological review of dengue in French Polynesia between 2006 and 2008. Method - The article is based on data from the dengue surveillance system provided by laboratories, the sentinel network, and emergency department visits at the French Polynesia Hospital Center (emergency room visits and hospitalizations reported for dengue). The control strategies used are also described. Results - An epidemic of serotype 1 dengue began in August 2006 and ended in November 2007. The epidemic was of moderate intensity and not particularly severe compared to that of 2001. Conclusion - The dengue surveillance system must be strengthened, particularly the sentinel network, by increasing the involvement of participating physicians. Municipalities and their populations must commit to long-term efforts to eliminate larval breeding sites in order to maintain the lowest possible mosquito densities at all times. (R.A.)
