As part of a collaboration launched in 2002 aimed at establishing an epidemiological surveillance program for RATP employees, Santé publique France and the Régie autonome des transports parisiens (RATP) are continuing their partnership to supplement existing data on the health status of current and former RATP employees through independent scientific support provided by the agency to the RATP’s occupational health and safety department. This new collaboration will focus in particular on mortality by occupation, cardiovascular diseases, and underground rail tunnels.
Over the next three years, several studies will be conducted. They will focus on:
a description of mortality rates, both overall and by occupation, for the period from 1980 to 2022, compared to those of the population of the Île-de-France region;
updating the job-exposure matrix for particulate matter in underground railway facilities using new data, particularly in the maintenance sector;
a comparison of cardiorespiratory mortality among employees based on their exposure, as defined using the job-exposure matrix mentioned above;
a description of employees’ blood pressure based on their job, using data from occupational health medical records.
The results of these studies will be shared with RATP employees and will be made public.
The partnership also aims to promote and implement Santé publique France’s prevention and health promotion campaigns (e.g., the “Month Without Tobacco” campaign) among RATP employees.
In addition, Santé publique France will provide support to the occupational health and prevention department in registering its prevention initiatives with the French Registry of Effective/Promising Interventions in Prevention and Health Promotion.
Santé publique France will provide scientific and technical support to the RATP’s occupational health and safety department in conducting various epidemiological studies. This includes, in particular, methodological advice during the development of protocols, the provision of reference data to compare the health status of RATP employees with that of the French population, as well as support for the interpretation and dissemination of results. Our participation is part of our regulatory mandate (Article L1413-7, paragraph 4 of the Public Health Code) to establish epidemiological surveillance in workplaces, particularly in collaboration with occupational health and safety departments, without any financial exchange between Santé publique France and the RATP.
