The flu is a contagious viral respiratory infection that causes seasonal outbreaks every winter. The flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect yourself.

Every year, the flu affects millions of people in France and is responsible for thousands of severe cases, particularly among the elderly and those with chronic conditions. According to the latest data published in our surveillance bulletin, flu activity was rising sharply in early December across all age groups.

In mainland France, all regions are now experiencing an epidemic, with the exception of Corsica, which has moved into the pre-epidemic phase. In the overseas departments and regions, French Guiana has also moved into the pre-epidemic phase, and Mayotte has been in an epidemic since mid-November.

To follow the evolution of the situation, consult our weekly epidemiological bulletins on acute respiratory infections:

Preventive measures remain essential to protect yourself and others

As the holiday season approaches, Santé publique France reminds the public of the preventive measures to protect against the flu and limit the risk of transmitting the infection to others if you are sick:

  • Get vaccinated: it’s not too late to get a flu shot. The vaccine is available at pharmacies and is fully covered for target populations.

  • Follow preventive measures:

    • Wear a mask at the first sign of symptoms (fever, runny nose, or cough), in crowded places (public transportation, hospitals, etc.) or when around people at risk;

    • Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly with soap and water or hand sanitizer;

    • cough or sneeze into your elbow;

    • Ventilate rooms regularly.

Who should get vaccinated?

The vaccination campaign against the flu and COVID-19 began on October 14, 2025. These vaccines are particularly recommended for:

  • people aged 65 and older;

  • people with weakened immune systems;

  • pregnant women;

  • people with chronic conditions (diabetes, respiratory failure, etc.);

  • residents of nursing homes;

  • healthcare professionals;

  • people for whom high-dose or adjuvanted vaccines are preferentially recommended.

Santé publique France reminds the public that vaccination is essential because it reduces the risk of severe illness and hospitalization, especially among the most vulnerable populations.

Did you know?

The flu and COVID-19 can circulate at the same time. Preventive measures and vaccination against both viruses work together to provide optimal protection.
