In the wake of Cyclone Chido’s passage over the island of Mayotte, the healthcare system has been severely affected. Santé publique France is taking action and calling on volunteer healthcare reservists to come and reinforce the teams on the ground.

On December 14, 2024, Cyclone Chido severely struck the island of Mayotte, causing extensive damage across much of the territory. The situation is critical, and medical reinforcements are expected to prevent the health crisis from worsening. Infrastructure such as drinking water and electrical systems has been heavily damaged, intensifying health risks in a region where living conditions are already difficult.

Given the scale of the situation, Santé publique France’s Medical Reserve has been mobilized and launched an urgent call for volunteer medical reservists this weekend.

What profiles are being sought?

  • emergency physicians, nephrologists, anesthesiologists, intensive care specialists

  • orthopedic surgeons, trauma surgeons, general surgeons

  • nursing assistants

  • pharmacy technicians and hospital pharmacists

  • midwives

  • State-certified nurses with experience in emergency care, surgery, or hemodialysis

  • operating room nurses

  • coordinators / logisticians

  • psychologists for reservists and healthcare providers

What is the goal?

  • To strengthen local medical teams in the face of a surge in patients by providing immediate support to hospitals and health centers

  • Prevent health risks

  • Support the population by providing psychological and social assistance to victims and affected families
