Addiction Prevention: Effective Interventions and Evaluation. *Santé en action* Issue No. 449.

How can we ensure that a public health intervention is effective? Issue 449 of *Santé en action* outlines the conditions necessary for a prevention, education, and health promotion program to have a positive impact on populations.

5 Real-World Examples of Addiction Prevention Analyzed

Tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis use among young people have been evaluated to scientifically determine their effectiveness. The result: some programs are effective, and well-designed ones demonstrate their value in a compelling way. On the other hand, other programs have little or no impact and may even increase substance use levels. This finding calls for great vigilance. In prevention, education, and health promotion, evaluating the effectiveness of an intervention requires a complex dual approach—both quantitative and qualitative. The challenge? Directing public investments “toward interventions that offer the best guarantees of quality and effectiveness.”

Also in this issue: health monitoring of children at risk; the challenges faced by adolescents living in social housing; the prevention work of Fil Santé Jeunes targeting adolescents in distress; a feature on Travellers, including the comprehensive health support provided by associations, the health status of this population, and determinants such as substandard housing; a segment on early childhood and childcare, where we learn that access to group childcare is associated with fewer relationship difficulties later in life for the child.
Finally, this issue presents the European program for preventing loss of independence among the elderly, as well as the “Smoke-Free Month” initiative with a focus on Occitanie.
