Bacterial sexually transmitted infections in France: the situation in 2015 and recent trends.

Introduction: Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been on the rise in France since the late 1990s. This article presents recent epidemiological trends through 2015, as well as the characteristics of patients diagnosed with an STI. Method: STI surveillance relies on voluntary networks of physicians and laboratory professionals. The "RésIST" STI surveillance network collects demographic, clinical, laboratory, and behavioral data from clinicians for early syphilis and gonorrhea. A network coordinated by the National Reference Center (CNR) for Chlamydia Infections collects the same type of data for rectal lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) and non-LGV rectal Chlamydia infections. The "Renachla" and "Rénago" laboratory networks collect demographic and biological data on chlamydia and gonorrhea. Trends for 2013–2015 are described based on the number of cases reported by sites that participated consistently during this period. Results: In 2015, the number of early syphilis, gonococcal infections, and LGV continued to rise. This increase is particularly marked among men who have sex with men (MSM). A rise in the number of syphilis and gonococcal infections is also observed among heterosexuals, despite a relatively low number of cases. Conclusion: Early-stage syphilis, gonococcal infection, and LGV are on the rise in France, particularly among MSM. This increase reflects a rise in risky sexual behaviors described by behavioral studies conducted in this population. Early screening of patients and their partners, followed by prompt treatment, is essential to interrupt the transmission of STIs, within the context of HIV prevention that has expanded to include tools other than condoms alone.
