It is living conditions and their social determinants that shape inequalities.
According to Michael Marmot, chair of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Commission on Social Determinants of Health, social injustice kills on a massive scale. The links between unfair economic policies, inadequate social policies and programs, and poor governance largely explain the health inequalities currently observed around the world. To reduce these inequalities, we must therefore address their roots—that is, the “causes of the causes,” the socio-environmental determinants of health: inequalities in power, money, and resources, as well as the conditions in which people are born, grow up, live, work, and age.
