Reports of nosocomial infections suggesting transmission of infectious agents from healthcare workers to patients, France, 2001–2007.
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) affect not only patients but also healthcare workers. This study analyzed, among the 5,342 HAI reports received between 2001 and 2007 by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance, those potentially involving healthcare staff. Among these reports were 48 cases of pertussis (including 7 in which the index case was a staff member), 62 cases of tuberculosis (45% of which followed infection of a healthcare worker), 132 cases of Group A streptococcal infections (including 1 suggesting postoperative transmission confirmed by molecular typing), 149 cases of gastroenteritis (13% of which involved staff), 43 cases of influenza (only 1 of which had a nursing staff member as the index case), 10 cases of hepatitis B virus seroconversion (only 1 confirmed case of transmission from healthcare worker to patient), and 120 cases of scabies (one-third of which involved staff). These data from the IN reporting system, which are non-exhaustive and incomplete, suggest that the circulation of numerous pathogens in healthcare settings primarily exposes patients and, to a lesser extent, healthcare workers. They help shed light on the circumstances under which certain transmissions may occur, even though formal, documented evidence of transmission from healthcare worker to patient remains rare. The situations described should, however, lead to increased awareness among healthcare professionals of the infection risks they may pose to their patients. They underscore the importance of vaccination policies for healthcare professionals and adherence to standard precautions. (R.A.)
