Acute Hepatitis B: Results from the First Year of Reporting (March 1, 2003–March 1, 2004). National Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, 2001–2003

Key points: - 158 reported cases of acute hepatitis B (58% reported by a hospital physician); - 3 cases of fulminant hepatitis (including 2 deaths); - 2 cases of neonatal transmission (including 1 death from fulminant hepatitis); - 91 cases (63%) could have been prevented by vaccination; - an increase in the age of cases compared to the pre-vaccination period; - these data suggest a lower incidence than in the early 1990s and a positive impact of vaccination.
