International surveillance is a process for the early detection and validation of alerts regarding public health events of international significance. This surveillance system, established at the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) in 2003, enabled the detection and documentation of the 2009 A(H1N1) pandemic in real time to inform and support public health responses across France and help adapt them.
