Epidemiological and Virological Surveillance of Influenza in Metropolitan France, 2013–2014 Season

This article presents an epidemiological and virological overview of influenza activity in France during the 2013–2014 season. Methods: This review is based on a descriptive analysis of influenza surveillance data from mainland France provided by outpatient medical networks, virological analyses from partner laboratories, reports of outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in elderly care facilities, surveillance of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for influenza, surveillance of severe influenza cases hospitalized in intensive care units, and available mortality data. Results: The 2013–2014 season in mainland France was characterized by a low-intensity, short-duration epidemic. The epidemic started late in the community, in late January, peaked in week 07/2014, and ended in late February, for a total of five weeks of epidemic activity. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) viruses co-circulated predominantly throughout the epidemic. Type B viruses remained sporadic. The impact of acute respiratory infections (ARIs), particularly influenza, in elderly care facilities remained limited. Among patients diagnosed with influenza in emergency departments, 8.6% were hospitalized (mostly adults), a higher proportion than in the three previous seasons. A total of 661 severe cases were admitted to intensive care. These severe cases, with a median age of 55 years, were primarily infected with the A(H1N1)pdm09 virus. The case fatality rate among severe cases remained comparable to that observed during the previous three seasons. Conclusion: The 2013–2014 influenza epidemic, which was mild and short-lived, was characterized by the co-circulation of influenza A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. Nevertheless, it resulted in the hospitalization of nearly 700 severe cases in intensive care units. (R.A.)
