Commentary. Effects of temperature and air pollutants on cardiovascular and respiratory diseases among men and women over 65 in Tokyo, July–August 1980–1995. Special Issue. Air Pollution and the Elderly: Specific Issues
This article is a critical analysis of the following study: Ye F, Piver WT, Ando M, Portier CJ. Effects of temperature and air pollutants on cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in men and women over 65 years of age in Tokyo, July and August 1980–1995. Environ Health Perspect. 2001 Apr;109(4):355-9. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between daily variations in temperature, atmospheric concentrations of pollutants, and emergency hospital admissions of people over 65 years of age for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases during the summer months. The results suggest a clearer and more consistent effect on the reasons for hospital admission for the pollutants studied (NO2, PM10, but not CO) than for the daily maximum temperature.
