A survey of crack users in the Île-de-France region. Feedback on a harm reduction tool designed to limit the transmission of HIV and hepatitis
In France, the population of crack users is particularly at risk of hepatitis C transmission through the sharing of glass crack pipes, which are easily breakable and conduct heat well. Numerous injuries to the hands and mouth resulting from the use of these glass pipes can serve as entry points for infection by infectious agents. To date, harm reduction policies remain focused on injection drug use and do not account for this specific risk exposure. This observation led the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance and Cermes3 to conduct an exploratory epidemiological survey with a descriptive focus, with the aim of better understanding the needs of this population in France and assessing the impact of distributing a new harm reduction tool on the health status of crack users. This action research is being conducted in collaboration with an inter-organizational collective and the drug users themselves. (R.A.)
