The Impact of Health Events on the Life Courses of Older Adults: Findings from the European SHARE Survey
Introduction - The overall effect of life events has been well studied in the literature on stress, and the consequences of certain health events have been examined in epidemiological studies. Few studies have simultaneously examined the long-term impact of multiple health events. Method - The sample consists of individuals aged 50 to 90 who participated in the first four waves of the SHARE survey (n = 10,668). Multivariate multinomial regressions model trajectories of functional, mental, and social health between Wave 1 and Wave 4. Health events (fall, fracture, heart attack, stroke, and hospitalization), as recorded in Wave 1, are taken into account. Results - Individuals who fell in Wave 1 exhibit lower health levels than other fall victims and than those who did not report any events across all indicators considered. In the controlled models, falls and hospitalization are two events significantly associated with a higher probability of reducing social activities between the first and last waves; hospitalization limits the chances of experiencing an improvement in subjective health, and falls are significantly associated with a trajectory of disability. Discussion - Health events significantly impair older adults’ health in the short and long term. The mechanisms explaining these relationships will be presented and tested, particularly to verify whether older adults who experience these deteriorations also face an unfavorable health status and socioeconomic situation (accumulation of disadvantages).
