Men's Health, Jan/Feb 2011, No. 411: The Socio-Environmental Determinants of Older Adults' Health
What if the health of older adults were a collective responsibility? The latest research shows that while the health of older adults certainly depends on well-known individual factors, it also depends heavily on “socio-environmental determinants”: social connections, access to services and care, an adapted living environment, financial resources, community solidarity, a recognized place in society, and so on. Some twenty experts review current knowledge and practices and demonstrate that, if we wish to promote the health of older adults, it is the so-called “ecological” approach—which takes these socio-environmental determinants into account—that must be adopted, as recommended by the WHO. Also in this issue, two surveys: one on the health consequences of violence, and the other on the confirmed rise in smoking rates in France.
