Reference Guide for Data Collection for the Ongoing Survey on Accidents in Daily Life. Epac Network
This document contains all the information necessary for collecting data for the Ongoing Survey on Accidents in Daily Life (EPAC). The EPAC data collection process is based on recording visits to emergency departments for accidents in daily life at certain hospitals, including data on the injured person (age, sex, residence, socioeconomic status), their care (date and time of arrival at the emergency department, treatment, hospitalization if applicable), the immediate characteristics of the accident (mechanism, location, activity, type of injury, injured body part), and the products (agents, elements) that caused or were involved in the accident. Finally, a brief description of the accident is recorded in free text. Hospitals that collect data for EPAC do so voluntarily; they receive a grant and thus participate, in accordance with the Public Health Code, in the National Public Health Network. Data are collected comprehensively and transmitted promptly to the InVS. Quality analyses have been conducted since 2002 at least once a year in each hospital within the EPAC network to ensure and report on the quality, completeness, and reliability of data collection. Days are selected at random (at least one per quarter), and the records of patients who visited the emergency department are analyzed to determine whether or not to include them in the data collection, and recoded according to local protocols. Each analysis results in a report sent to the hospital, which specifies, in particular, the conditions for accessing records, the completeness of the data collection on the randomly selected days, and the completeness and accuracy of the items.
