Visual Impairment and Health: What Are the Specific Issues?
This article presents the main findings of a qualitative study conducted under an agreement between INPES and CNSA. Healthcare and social services professionals, representatives of organizations, and accessibility experts were consulted individually or in group settings. Approximately twenty blind and visually impaired individuals were interviewed using semi-structured interviews to explore their expectations, perceptions, and practices regarding healthcare. While the individuals concerned do not make very strong demands on this issue, they mention psychological difficulties that are more or less directly related to their visual impairment and that appear to depend heavily on when the visual impairment or blindness occurred and on the level of access to rehabilitation. Other health topics of concern include maternity, physical activity, and nutrition. While access to care and information is not viewed very negatively, areas for improvement are nevertheless identified. The requests of people with visual impairments tend to focus on accessibility issues (to transportation, assistive devices, etc.).
