Social Stigma and Public Health: Ethical Issues.
Stigmatization, an inherent risk in any public health initiative, undermines prevention and, moreover, can be harmful to society. Quebec anthropologist Raymond Massé explains why the lack of ethical reflection on the impacts of public health interventions “is no longer acceptable.” In particular, practitioners must be trained regarding the social and ethical costs of the intervention programs they implement. Ethical public health requires accountability from those who implement it on a daily basis and from the political authorities who mandate them.
