Role and responsibilities in therapeutic education coordination.

Introduction: The role of patient therapeutic education (PTE) coordinators is growing internationally. In France, it is an integral part of the regulatory framework for PTE programs. However, whether in France or in various European countries, the situations, activities, and competencies common to PTE coordinators are gradually taking shape, regardless of the specific condition and/or type of practice involved. Methods: The National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (Inpes) conducted a project based on an innovative method that combines the formalization of practices as perceived by the professionals themselves (91 stakeholders surveyed in France and about 30 in five other European countries) with the insights of a group of international and national TPE experts, with a view to iterative development and through successive consultation phases. Results: As the project unfolded, the analysis demonstrated the pivotal role of the coordinator in liaising with various ETP stakeholders. The role of the ETP coordinator was the subject of a reference framework centered on six emblematic situations, 20 activities, and 26 competencies divided into three domains. Discussion: This work served as the basis for developing a new competency-based regulatory framework for VET coordination. The competency framework for the VET coordination role is a relevant tool for designing training and validating prior learning in this field. It also opens up new avenues for research.
