An Overview of Information Sources on the Primary Prevention of Work-Related Cancers for Occupational Physicians: Needs and Prospects.
Objective: The prevention of cancers linked to exposure to carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic (CMR) substances and/or carcinogenic processes in the workplace is now a priority in various public policies. Method: In this context, the National Cancer Institute (INCa) commissioned a quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews on the expectations and needs of occupational physicians regarding information materials, training, and communication for the primary prevention of work-related cancers, as well as the topics to be prioritized. These were conducted in September and October 2010 among 603 occupational physicians. Results: The results confirm the strong involvement of occupational physicians in the prevention of work-related cancers, as 93% of them report being confronted with workplace cancer risks and their prevention. For their information on the primary prevention of work-related cancers, they use a wide variety of sources and media: 60% rely on newspapers and books, and 45% use the internet. However, the results are mixed regarding their ability to keep their knowledge up to date, as only 64% are satisfied with this aspect. In light of these findings, 95% of the physicians surveyed expressed interest in documents summarizing scientific knowledge, and 93% expressed interest in regularly updated information on available tools. Conclusion: The development of such tools could help address the time constraints reported by occupational physicians, enabling them to quickly access the information they seek, existing documentary resources, and appropriate materials to effectively carry out their duties in the field of occupational cancer prevention.
