An Overview of Continuing Education Programs for Home Health Aides in the Field of Supporting the Independence of Older Adults.

Continuing education for home health aides is constantly evolving and is expected to grow further. Demand is increasing, both in terms of the number of professionals and the quality of services provided. As part of an agreement with the CNSA, INPES conducted a study in 2011 among organizations providing continuing education for home health aides. This study had two objectives: to produce a national overview of continuing education resources for home care workers and to assess the familiarity of these organizations’ educational leaders with Inpes tools. 826 organizations were surveyed and 3,898 training programs were identified, including 956 certification programs (25%) and 2,942 short-term vocational training programs (75%). The training topics most frequently covered in short courses were examined, both in terms of delivery methods (what approach? what teaching tools used?) and through the profiles of trainers and partnership arrangements. Awareness of INPES and its resources was assessed, and expectations were gathered. Home care professionals obtain a certification or diploma primarily through continuing education, that is, by returning to school or through a process of prior learning assessment. This study provided a more precise overview of the continuing education offerings in each of France’s regions.
