Mediation: A New Social Bond.

After outlining the family contexts in which social workers play a mediating role (divorce, domestic violence, intergenerational conflicts), the author explains what makes this approach unique. Unlike the justice system, whose role is to restore order, mediation embraces disorder and, by allowing feelings to be expressed, helps restore dialogue while also fostering an awareness in each person of their ability to manage their daily life and relationships. When applied in schools between teachers and students, particularly in so-called “sensitive” neighborhoods, it can help resolve or even prevent conflicts that lead to violence. Training young people from these neighborhoods in mediation enables them to reclaim their place as individuals within the social network.
